I first visited Bijagua de Upala with my wife Erica in 2016, and immediately fell in love with the area. It's a small, rural community that is seldom visited by tourists, but has spectacular, wild rainforest that's protected by the Tenorio National Park to the east and Miravalles Jorge Manuel Dengo National Park to the west.
I was introduced to the incredible birds of Bijagua by the excellent guide and director of Tapir Valley, Donald Varela.
Since that first visit, we've returned nearly every year to this wonderful community and we're building a house at the base of Volcan Tenorio so that we can spend even more time here.
Over the last few years, I've become the official photographer of Tapir Valley, and have been fortunate enough to be able to explore this nature reserve for weeks at a time, just me and the birds and wildlife.
I've created this site to help introduce people to this unexplored area and help visitors find an excellent local guide in the area.
When I'm in Costa Rica, I lead bird photography tours and love sharing the birds with others and helping them take photos of them.
If you have any questions about Bijagua or Costa Rica, please feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to help!
